Sunday June 13, 2010 WADE HENDRICKSON CHARGES TO HIS SIXTH BIG BLOCK MODIFIED WIN BRIDGEPORT, NJ (June 13, 2010) Defending 2009 Modified Point Champion Wade Hendrickson continued his early season domination of the big 5/8 mile Bridgeport Speedway, driving his way through the field from his twelfth starting spot to pick up his sixth Big Block Modified win of the 2010 season. In the Crate Modified division, Barnsboro, NJ’s Travis Hill made an exciting last lap fourth turn pass in the twenty lap event to grab his fourth win of the season. The Tri-State Racesaver Sprints made their third appearance of the season at the South Jersey clay oval, with Bruce Kindberg, out of Rockaway, NJ, getting his career first win in their twenty lap A-main. Future star Matt Budd took the Rookie feature for the fifth time in the 2010 season.
Wilmington, DE’s Ron Roberts used his pole position starting spot to take the early lead in the twenty-five lap Big Block Modified feature event, with rising star Matt Harrell right on his rear bumper for the first three circuits on the spacious 5/8th mile oval. While Roberts went on to keep his Array of Monograms #Z14 out front until lap eleven, the action behind him was intense with the top five changing every lap. Roberts’ teammate, Boyertown PA’s Ryan Watt cracked the top five on lap four and pulled behind Roberts just three laps later and began to pressure his car owner all around the speedway. Watt was using the low groove to pull alongside Roberts and after coming down the front straight to complete lap ten, Watt powered under Roberts coming out of turn two to take the lead on the backstretch. At the halfway signal from Starter Ken Golden, Watt had a two car length lead over Roberts, who now had his hands full with “The Flying Farmer” Wade Hendrickson, who was beginning to smell his sixth win of the season. Lap thirthteen proved to be unlucky for Roberts when Hendrickson wrestled the second spot away and began to push the Leach Associates #99 to the leader. Watt was able to fight off the furious challenges of Hendrickson until lap seventeen, when the two-time champion charged under Watt in turns three and four to take the lead. Caution flags on lap nineteen and twenty let Watt try to take advantage of the double file restarts to regain his font spot, but Hendrickson used every bit of his Hewlitt big block horsepower to go on to take the win. Overhead Door teammates Richie Pratt and Brett Ballard came home in third and fourth, with Chic Cossaboone recovering from an early race pit stop to complete the top five. Cossaboone, Harrell, and Watt were the winners of the three eight lap qualifying races.
Fielding cars in both the Big Block an Crate Modified divisions, Ron Roberts again used his front row starting spot to lead the early portions of the twenty lap Crate Modified feature race. With Roberts trying to maintain a comfortable lead, a pair of side by side battles were going with Eric Kormann and Chuck Hopkins battling for the runner up position, while Neal Williams and Travis Hill were right on their tails. A lap eight caution flag tightened up the field, and on the restart a three-way tug of war ensued, with Roberts running the center of the track flanked by Hopkins and Hill. Hopkins pedaled his Fastenal #71 on the high groove of the track and pulled out in front of Roberts on the backstretch to take the lead while Hill hung on the bottom to take second before entering turn three. At halfway, Hopkins and Hill were charging around the track door to door and with just five to go, Hopkins still had Hill right on his rear bumper, while Neal Williams and Larry Lippincott battled each other waiting for the leaders to make a mistake. Two caution periods in the last four laps of the race kept the front four bunched up, and after getting the white flag for the last lap, Hill made his final move blasting down the backstretch and diving under Hopkins as the two entered turn three. Holding onto his low line flawlessly, Hill came out of turn four under full throttle and inched in front of Hopkins for the lead, winning by less than a car length at the line. Williams, Lippincott, and Kormann rounded out the top five for a highly entertaining event. Hopkins and Hill took the wins in the eight lap qualifying heats.
The Tri-State Racesavers Sprint feature saw pole sitter Bruce Kindberg take the early lead in his Wayne Subaru #2K, holding off the advances of the hard charging Ryan Smith for the first half of the event. On lap eleven, Kindberg bobbled going around a lapped car giving Smith another chance to grab the lead, but Kindberg recovered and pulled back away from the pack. While Kindberg was stretching out to a half a straightaway lead, Smith now had to work to hold off the late charges of the Precise Landscaping #3J of Jeff Mueller, who with five to go was using the high side of the track to challenge for the runner up spot. As the checkered flags were waved by Starter Gary Buzby, Kindberg had his first career win in convincing fashion, leading Smith and Mueller across the line by ¾ of a straightaway, with Doug Smith and Stef Palmai filling out the top five. Heats were won by Jeff Geiges and Steve Wilson.
Rookie point leader Matt Budd powered his way past Frank Raio on lap three and went on to his fifth win of the season. Raio held on for second, with Kyle Newcomb, Troy Burger, and Pete Chickvary filling out the field.
