Sunday March 17, 2013 HORTON AND WILLIAMS ARE FIRST ENTRANTS TO BRIDGEPORT SPEEDWAY’S 60 OVER SPECIAL Bridgeport, NJ (March 17, 2013) - The first official entries for the “The 60 Over Special” on Saturday, March 30 at Bridgeport Speedway were received recently. Jimmy Horton and Neal Williams became the initial entrants by taking “The 60 Over Challenge” for this 60-lap Race of Champions Big Block Modified contest. By signing up for “The 60 Over Challenge” via a $60 gambler’s fee, the winner of this race, the first event for Bridgeport Speedway’s 2013 Poker Series for Big Block Modifieds, will go home with $6,060.60.
What will certainly be an emotional day for many, this race will also mark one of Bridgeport’s most important events in its 40-year plus history. Doug Hoffman, a 92-time feature career winner in the Big Block Modified division (123 total Bridgeport wins), will be honored and remembered throughout the day that will see a stellar field assembled for this race.
Jimmy Horton of Neshanic Station, NJ, who arguably has raced more times with Hoffman than any other competitor, has submitted his “60 over Challenge” to Bridgeport headquarters. If “The Sensational One” pulls off the Race of Champions victory, it would net he and car owner Dieter Schmidt a $6,060.60 check. Horton will once again be reunited with the long-time Lincoln Auto Body sponsored No. 5 machine. Horton finished third in points in the 2012 modified point standings and is looking to finish a few rungs higher in the championship standings this season. Dieter Schmidt looks at this race as one that he would like to win almost more than any other. Schmidt and Doug Hoffman had found success like no other combination throughout the 1990’s. Hoffman won several track championships, as well as landing in victory lane at many speedways, driving the popular “LAB-5”. “Doug and I had a lot of success. We just clicked when we hooked up back then and this is one race that I would love to win in his memory,” Schmidt admitted.
Another driver who is chomping at the bit to head back to his old stomping grounds is Pittsgrove, NJ’s own Neal Williams. “The Wheel”, as he is known throughout the racing community, is certainly no stranger when it comes to the big 5/8 mile clay at Bridgeport. Williams was the 2010 Crate-1 Bridgeport Speedway track champion as well as the 2011 Syracuse Super Dirt Week Sportsman winner. Last year Williams was able to find victory lane at Big Diamond Raceway after moving up to the 358 small block ranks. With a new big block strapped under his No.323 machine, Neal is eager to conquer Bridgeport in Doug Hoffman’s Memorial 60-lap event. If Williams can meet his goals, he will leave Bridgeport on March 30 with the very eye-catching $6,060.60 figure in memory of Hoffman. The winner will receive the standard $4,000 if the “60 Over Challenge” has not been taken.
In addition, two other racing classes will be in action. The new Crate/Sportsman division is set to partake in the opening hand of their Poker Series with a 30-lap feature. The first race of the new Shoot-Out Series for the Outlaw Stock Cars will round out the card with the “Bill Reynolds Memorial 20” in memory of the former novelty stand owner at Bridgeport Speedway.
On Saturday, March 30, the pit gates unlock at 11:00 a.m. and fans can begin to enter the grandstands at 1:00 p.m. Warm-ups will get started at 3:00 p.m. with the first heat race hitting the track at 4:00 p.m. Adult (16 and older) admission for the opener will be $25 with students (10-15) being admitted for $12. Kids 9 and under are free. Admittance to the pits is $35.

As a premier racing complex, Bridgeport Speedway is a banked 5/8th mile dirt oval, featuring a dirt 1/4 mile oval embedded in the center, and is located in Southern New Jersey -- just minutes from Pennsylvania and Delaware at exit 14 off of I-295.
