Monday May 25, 2009 MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND WINS GO TO HENDRICKSON AND MICHAEL AT BRIDGEPORT BRIDGEPORT, NJ (May 24, 2009) - On Wing Night presented by
Cicontes Pizza featuring twin 25-lap features, Wade Hendrickson won
the Big Block Modified feature while Curt Michael captured the main
event for the URC Sprints. Kyle Borror took home the checkered flag in
the GM Sportsman race with the 358 Sportsman feature to be completed
on Saturday, May 30.
After a few misfires at the start of the 25-lap Big Block Modified
feature, Stan Frankenfield Jr. took the early lead with Brian Truppi,
Bob Sarkisian and Jimmy Horton in pursuit. Back to back cautions on
lap 4 allowed Sarkisian to jump into second with Wade Hendrickson
motoring into the third spot. While still leading the feature,
Frankenfield Jr.stopped and dropped out of the contest on lap 7. With
Sarkisian now in charge, Truppi moved back to the second spot when
racing resumed. Hendrickson took back the runner-up position on lap
10. Sarkisian seemed to be on the way to victory lane but several
cautions kept drawing the pack back to him. Following a yellow flag on
lap 12, Sarkisian began to slow and Hendrickson inherited the lead.
Once in front of the field, Hendrickson survived two more cautions to
escape with his thirty-eighth career win at Bridgeport Speedway. Jimmy
Horton came back from one of the lap 4 skirmishes to claim second
place. Third place went to fast improving Matt Harrell. Steve Durand
finished in fourth while Scott Irwin finished fifth. Richie Pratt Jr.,
Mike Barone and Sarkisian won the Big Block Modified heat races.
An opening lap red flag for a multi-car tangle thwarted the initial
start of the 25-lap main for the URC Sprints. When action did get
underway, Danny Massey led the first lap but was quickly passed by
Curt Michael on lap 2 following a restart. Leading the way with a
strong running car, Michael began to encounter lapped traffic on lap
11. Becca Anderson passed Massey for second place on lap 11. A little
further behind, nineteenth place starter Michael Carber was on the
charge and entered the top five on lap 12. The cautions lights
illuminated on lap 13 when Massey developed a mechanical issue.
Michael kept his lead on the restart but Anderson, Davey Sammons and
Carber remained in the hunt. Carber got by Sammons for third on lap
20. The final caution of the event occurred on lap 22 for Chad Layton.
When the green flag waved one last time in the event, Michael showed
his strength as he powered away from the competition in the final laps
to get his fortieth career victory. Anderson, Carber, Sammons and
Chris Coyle rounded out the top five. The URC heat races went to
Massey, Michael and Anderson. Carber won the B-Main event.
In the 15-Lap GM Sportsman event, polesitter Kyle Borror led
wire-to-wire to take his first ever career feature. Tom Moore Jr.
finished in second place with Eric Kormann taking third. Chuck Buchman
and David Bell filled out the top five. Buchman and Bob Burgess won
the GM Sportsman heat races.
Due to time constraints, the 358 Sportsman feature will be resumed on
Saturday, May 30, 2009 with 15 laps remaining in the first event of
the Racing World Magazine 358 Sportsman Bonus Series. Jason Duppel
will be the leader went the event continues. Duppel, Dan Cogdill, and
John Kelly were victorious in the 358 Sportsman heat races. Tom Miller
took the checkered flag in the consolation event.
