PRATT COMES OUT ON TOP AT BRIDGEPORT SPEEDWAY
BRIDGEPORT, NJ (May 31,2009) - On Scout Night at Bridgeport Speedway, Richie Pratt, Jr. was the victor in the Big Block Modified feature. Chuck Hopkins won the regularly scheduled 358 Sportsman event while Jesse Hill took the checkered flag in the completed 358 Sportsman feature from Saturday, May 23. In the GM Sportsman division, Bob Burgess was the winner and Billy Martino captured the Rookie GM Sportsman race.

In the 25-Lap Big Block Modified feature, veteran Mike Franz took the early lead with Brian Truppi, Bob Sarkisian and Richie Pratt, Jr. in the early chase. Sarkisian took over second place on lap 3 but Pratt, Jr. snared the position from Sarkisian on the very next circuit. Still in front of the pack, Franz began to face the pressure of Pratt, Jr. and relinquished the lead to Pratt, Jr. on lap 7. As the yellow flag would not appear until lap 22, Pratt, Jr. began to stretch out his lead over Franz and Sarkisian. Behind the top three, many cars battled for position as Jimmy Chester motored to fourth and Jimmy Horton took over fifth place on lap 12. With the long stretch of green flag racing, Pratt, Jr. began to encounter lapped traffic on lap 15. On lap 22, Chester slowed down in turn four and the first caution of the event appeared. When action resumed, Horton quickly advanced up to second place with Ryan Watt gaining the third spot. Shortly after getting second place, Horton’s right rear tire exploded and the event’s final yellow light flickered. Pratt, Jr. fended off Watt in the last two laps for his ninth career Big Block Modified win at Bridgeport and his first win in 2009. Watt finished in second place while Wade Hendrickson came from eighteenth to finish in third. Points leader Chad James wound up in fourth place while Franz scored a fifth place finish. Franz, Horton, and Chester won the Big Block Modified heat races.

Front row starter, John Kelly, led the opening 10 laps of the 20-Lap feature for the 358 Sportsman. Back in the pack of cars, Chuck Hopkins had already reached third place on lap 6 after starting the main event in the eleventh position. Kelly had a sizeable lead over Tom Solderich by lap 8 when he began to lap the field. As the second half of the race began, Hopkins continued his charge to the front and became the leader on lap 12. Travis Hill got by Solderich on lap 13 for the third spot. The yellow flag waved for the first time on lap 14 when the 358 Sportsman of Bob Lineman, Jr. showed smoke. On the single file restart, Hopkins kept his lead but Travis Hill jumped past Kelly for second and Jesse Hill grabbed third place from Solderich. John Cavallaro brought out the final caution on lap 18. On the single file restart with two laps to go, Hopkins outgunned the Hill Brothers and went onto claim his sixth career win. Second place went to Travis Hill with Jesse Hill taking third. Kelly and Jack Swain completed the top five. 358 Sportsman heat race winners were Kelly, Don Bogey, and Travis Hill. Sean Gunther won the consolation event.

Tom Solderich with Travis Hill in tow took over the lead from Jason Duppel as the 358 Sportsman feature from May 23rd resumed with 15 laps remaining. Just after completing one lap, Solderich and Travis Hill tangled briefly in front of the field causing the yellow flag to be displayed. With the top two runners now displaced, Jack Swain ascended to the top spot. When action resumed, the red flag was shown when Duppel’s spin on the backstretch caused the field to scatter and block the track. When the green flag waved again, Swain and Larry Lippincott battled side by side for the lead for six consecutive laps. After two more cautions and restarts, the top two runners were joined by third place runner Jesse Hill and fourth place runner Chuck Hopkins in a four-way for the lead. On lap 16, Jesse Hill hopped up to the second position and swept by Swain for the lead on lap 18. The elder Hill went on to capture his eleventh career win in the opening leg of the Racing World Magazine 358 Sportsman Bonus series. Swain held onto second place and Lippincott took the third position. Hopkins and Frank Dorry, Jr. rounded out the top five.

In the 15-Lap GM Sportsman contest, Bob Burgess took the lead on lap 5 after Corey Anderson experienced a right rear tire issue to grab his second career win. Tenth place starter Neal Williams ran very well in the second half of the feature to finish in second place. Tom Moore, Jr., Eric Kormann and Chuck Buchman filled out the top five. Anderson and Moore, Jr. were victorious in the GM Sportsman qualifying events.

Billy Martino celebrated his 50th birthday by winning his first race of the year in the Rookie GM Sportsman event.
